Trying to install a Samsung EVO 850 in a 2007 HP desktop with Windows 8.1. Computer won't recognize the drive. Device Manager reports an error 10. Neither Windows nor Samsung's Data Migration Tool recognize the drive. I think the SATA to USB connector is good as it came off another machine I was using. Tried connecting to both my MacBook Air and a laptop running Windows 7. Neither machine recognized the drive.

Can I just go ahead and install the drive in my HP with the internal SATA connectors and see if the machine recognizes the drive then? USB seems to be the problem.

I don't have a high pain threshold for this. Been on the bleeding edge too many times before. If it is not going to be a simple fix, I'm just going to send the drive back,

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

I have performed the data migration using SATA on several machines - works faster as compared to the USB transfer.

I would suggest a clean install - the Samsung Magician software and Migration software are good, but there may be a few entries into the registry that it misses....

I found the Solution

1. Reboot Rig/PC

2. Boot into your UEFI/BIOS

3. Go to the Advanced Option

4. SATA Options in the Advanced Options

5. Change Hot Plug Disabled to Enabled on every SATA port

6. Restart the PC

7. Plug in your SSD and it should work now.

I don't recommend using Magician Software I heart a lot of bad things. Please use AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro and migrate your OS and it should be better.

I hope this helps please ask questions if you are confused.
