I just want to make sure which will be compatible with the asus tuf z390 plus gaming wifi motherboard? On asus website it says it supports m.2 socket 3 sata and pcie. Im just confused cause the 860 and 970 seems to have different connector/keys?

They are both supported. They do have different form factors though. The 860 is a 2.5 inch SATA SSD, whereas the 970 is a m.2 2280 form factor. They use different connectors and different protocols.

I can't seem to find a "supported SSD" or a QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for storage on this motherboard, but I've never heard a recent generation motherboard not supporting recent Samsung SSDs.

Just be aware that the m.2 form factor are connectors in which the whole card fits into, meaning there are no cables needed. 2.5 inch hard drives/SSDs need 2 cables, a power cable and a data cable (SATA). The 970 is significantly faster though.

(The 970 EVO has a newer version btw, the 970 EVO Plus)

The 970 is M.2 NVME (capable of 3400 MB/sec sequential reads), and all 860 EVO models (be they M.2 form factor or 2.5" standard) are SATA spec, and capable of approx 550 MB/sec sequential reads

In short...you want the 970 EVO or 970 EVO Plus, which is ~1000 MB/sec quicker on sequential writes than even the fast 970 EVO!

I saw a very good deal for samsung 860 evo m.2 however i noticed that the connector is very different with the 970. The 860 has 2 notches while the 970 only has one thats why i dont know if im gonna go for it. I dont wanna risk buying something that will not work

They are both supported by your board.
860 evo is sata, 970 evo is nvme.
