Hey folks, hoping someone can help me out here.
So a couple of weeks ago my hard disk started flashing (blue light) and making a ticking sound. I looked it up and transpires that the arm was stuck. The advice was to carefully open it up and adjust the arm back to the reset position.

I did this and now when I plug it in, it thinks for a while then comes up as 'E drive' next to my C drive, instead of SAMSUNG HARD DISK in 'Devices and Removable Storage' where it used to. When I click on it it informs me that it is 0gb, and needs formatting but I dare not touch it, as I have many fond memories in pictures and files etc. Really hoping someone can help!

Opening up an HDD (which to get to the arm, you'd be opening up the HDD itself not just the enclosure) can be problematic.

As you've realized, do not format it.

Provided it's being detected by your setup, there are programs available which can recover your data. I haven't used one personally, so won't recommend one is particular, just take a look at reviews etc.

Hi there rossco87,

Unfortunately, if the data stored on the drive is really important, your only option would be to look for some professional help. Most of the HDD manufacturers offer their own data recovery services or have some trusted partners.

Apart from that, you should keep in mind that you should never open up the drive, as the platters get exposed to dust contaminated environment.

very helpful

Thanks to the others who actually tried to help. I was wondering if anyone could suggest programs/ procedures in attempting to recover the data from the disk, like I said it comes up as E disc so still seems to be functioning to a degree.

If you open it up and "adjust" the arm, make the hardware problem even worst. Do what D_Know_WD suggest
