Hello, I have an unusual problem. I am currently having an issue with my M.2 nvme ssd, Its a Samsung 980 (non pro) 1TB model. The problem I am having is the drive freezes (not completely) upon deleting ONLY video files (mpeg, avi etc.) off my drive, the drive continues to work as other things still function, im capable of deleting or installing other files without issue while the problem is occurring. If I delete a video file, at random times it will act like it is frozen (even though its not) and the delete screen will stay at 0% sometimes for a long period of time, sometimes for multiple minutes. Then its like it unfreezes and is fine. This is not my primary drive/os drive. I have other drives including a NVME for my primary drive and only the samsung drive is having this problem. I have updated my motherboard bios to the current date, all my drivers are up to date and I even downloaded the samsung magician software to update firmware and check for errors and its still happening randomly even though it says the drive is working fine. Its not a major concern as it happens only from time to time, and only when deleting video files, and they arent very large files sometimes either, sometimes only a few MB in size. Its more just a minor annoyance, but was curious as if there was a possible solution to the problem. Im a fairly advanced user and built many computers and know quite a bit about hardware/software/os systems. Ive done some research already and found people having various issues with their NVME drives freezing but usually its large files or overheating issues. This doesnt seem to be the cause and I cant get it to do it on a regular basis, its random. Im not sure why its doing it, it recently started happening (after a fresh OS install)and ive been using the drive since I purchased it in 2021. I have run windows diagnostics thinking maybe its a windows issue, but receive no errors. Any help is much appreciated, thank you for your time.

to have a look if something's odd in general, run userbenchmark.com and post the link of your result. did you overclock? run memtest.org usb autoinstaller am not from it. any 3rd party software out of the ordinary installed? are your hdds spinning up while the thing is happening?

Well I would assume its nothing to do with memory or the fact that only the samsung drive is the one hanging up, and I also recently found it happens with audio files as well, only when deleting, not writing. The oddest thing is even when its happening the drive runs fine/normal while its going on, I can delete or read other stuff even when it locks up on deleting video/audio files randomly. And I cant get it to reproduce all the time, only on occasion. Samsung support wants me to just return the drive, but its a pain in the neck to get to, I just recently replaced the thermal paste on my noctua cooler, and the m.2 drive is under that, so id have to rip everything apart to get to it, for something thats just an occasional annoyance. And removing my noctua cooler isnt fun, last time it ripped out my cpu when i tried getting the cooler off (and it bent one of the cpu pins in the process) of it because the thermal paste kept the cpu cooler practically glued to the cpu, Not to mention thermal grizzly isnt exactly cheap to just having to keep reapplying it.

Im thinking it may just be software related or something to do with windows, as the drive worked perfectly fine prior to a fresh install of windows. Testing the drive multiple times has found no errors through crystal disk or samsung wizard, as I said its random, even under heavy load and higher temps I cannot get it to reproduce, and usually if it happens, waiting 2 mins or so, it goes back to normal like nothing happened. As I said before its not a main OS drive, I use it for video/photos and music only, sometimes the occasional game that requires SSD speeds (like starfield etc.). I downloaded user benchmark but they want you to pay for it? Wont let me run any tests otherwise. My CPU is overclocked by the bios settings, I dont tend to mess with setting my own timings or Ill use ryzen master for it to auto overclock, the gpu is stock and I dont overclock that. The memory and drives stay standard. I dont tend to mess with things unless they start slowing way down, ill start overclocking things (pcpu/gpu) once they get older just to eek out a little more performance before im forced to buy new and improved. So yeah like I said, its an oddity, My main M.2 SSD is a cruicial 2 TB for the OS and its been flawless, but the samsung just has this odd quirk, Just an annoyance more than anything, worst case I hit delete and it stays stuck at 0% a couple minutes, I walk away and come back and its fine again. Im more just looking to see if there were any ideas what would cause it and maybe im missing a quick fix. If not, its not a matter of life and death or enough to justify me returning it to samsung, If I have to pull the drive Id rather just replace it with something bigger/better. Just picking peoples brain more or less.
Thanks for the replies :)
