Recently I optimistically obtained a used 512 gb Samsung PM851 internal SSD, model MZ-7TE512HMHP-00000, firmware EXT0100Q. My internet research suggests it was probably a component piece in a package configured by an OEM (maybe Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc.). My conjecture was confirmed in a phone conversation with Samsung tech support, who stated they would not discuss this item (because they do not support their OEM products), so recommended I contact the OEM. Nor would they help me identify the OEM based on any of the identification data on its label--quite frustrating, given that these internal PM851's are widely available for sale.
My concern is numerous internet discussions documenting gradual read performance degradation for the PM851 (google: gradual read performance degradation pm851), similar to that of the Samsung 840EVO. Prior to installing it as my primary drive, I'd like to make sure it is ready to perform optimally, (i.e., a) diagnose if this issue applies to the SSD I have and if so, b) find and apply its remedy).
My label shows "2015.01"; one fix I found (http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/html/product/flash-solution/ssd/downloads/Samsung_PM851_Performance_Restoration_v10.zip) contains "Samsung_PM851_Performance_Restoration_setup_v1.0_RC2.exe" modified timestamp: December 23, 2014, 8:45:02 AM. I tried applying this fix by attaching my SSD to a different Windows 7 computer, but the "run" window only flashed quickly on screen and then disappeared, and the System Information for Windows (Topala) tool still identifies the firmware as EXT0100Q, so I'm guessing the fix failed.
How can I tell if my SSD actually has this problem, and if so, how do I fix it? Your insightful advice will be greatly appreciated.
