Greetings,
I own a Samsung RC510 laptop with Intel i5 480m, apparently with socket PGA988.

Although I recently upgraded to SSD and repasted cpu and gpu to lower the temps, the laptop still feels a bit laggish at times. The cpu is interchangeable so I thought about changing it.

What are some of the options available that will fit my laptop?

Thanks!

Solution
I have the same laptop as you, socket is rPGA 988 and CPU is i5 480M with Geforce 315M.
It has been 6 years.

The best upgrades you can do other than a SSD is to swap out the DVD drive for a caddy, install a HDD for storage or another SSD for Raid 0.

And voltage mod the CPU fan to the usb ports (there is a black cable linking the board to another small board with 2 usb ports) for running the CPU fan at maximum speed.

Also you might want to upgrade your CPU to i7 920XM and then do a voltage mod to 1.3V, then adjust clock multipliers using XTU to reach 4 GHz (30x). This will increase single thread and multithread performance considerably.

I currently use Tuniq TX-4 on my i5 480M, and modded it to run at 2.93 GHz boost with all 4...
Your current processor scores 2427 on passmark.com
The best processor with the socket you need is an i7-640M which gets a score of 2877.
So you can get about a 19% jump in performance at best.
I don't personally think it is worth it.

From a quick eBay search, i7-640M costs about 60€, so yeah it's not worth the money. If I find it for about 20€ maybe I will change it for a slight improvement! Thanks for the answer!

I tried disabling the Intel HD graphics, the screen would not work even though my RC510 has a discrete GPU. I connected the laptop to a external monitor and it worked, perhaps the display is linked to integrated graphics.
If you dont want to do a (possible) screen mod get a i7 820 QM, and do the fan mod.
If you want best possible performance, get an i7 920 XM, do the fan mod, do a socket voltage mod, and be prepared to do a HDMI screen mod(?)

Thanks for the reply! I will probably try boosting i5 to 2.9 because i7 cost over 60 euro and i don't think it's worth it. As for raid 0 i don't think that there are any significant performance boost if i Install a hdd for raid. The laptop doesn't even have sata port so it can't even reach ssd maximum speed..
