After getting the latest INF for the monitor, I checked the refresh rate. I have "hide refresh rates not supported" ticked, and the highest refresh rate listed it 100. The specs say 85. Is it possable that the new INF would allow for a higher refresh rate ? I have V-sync on and would love to run at 100, but don't want to damage the monitor.

Since the monitor is 85khz it is capable of 103Hz at 1024 x 768 resolution maximum.

There is a relatively simple way to calculate the maximum refresh rate of a monitor. You need to know the following. The maximum horizontal scan frequency, and the resolution that you want to run. All manufacturers publish this data. The formula below will give you an approximate refresh rate, to calculate the exact refresh rate the math gets harder and you need to know more details about the monitor.

(1 / Horiz Scan Freq) * (Number of Vertical lines + 50) = x
(1 / x) = Refresh rate (Add 50 lines for vertical blanking time).

So in the case of the 755DF has a (85,000) 85Khz horizontal scan rate. Lets assume that you want to run 1024 x 768 resolution. What is the maximum refresh rate?

(1 / 85000) = 0.000011765 * (768 + 50) =818

0.000011765 * 818 = 0.009623529

1 / 0.009623529 = 103.9Hz maximum refresh rate

OK, so why is the max refresh rate listed as 85 ?

1024 x 768 / 87i, 60, 70, 75, 85Hz

Also, what would happen if I tried to run it at 1280x1024 @ 100Hz ?

All of the refresh rates listed are VESA standards. VESA has not defined a standard above 85Hz, this is why manufactures list 85 as Max.

All modern monitors have protection circuits if you try to run a monitor out of its range, they simply go into energy save mode and blank the screen. You need a monitor with a 107-110Khz horizontal scan frequency to do 1280 x 1024 at 100Hz.

Why you would want to run that fast is beyond me, you only shorten the life of the monitor. And at some point the video starts to degrade because you are exceeding the video amps response range.

Thanks for the info !

I just want to run with the highest refresh rate in order to get the max FPS as I have V-syinc on. I have a G4 Ti4400, but have been told that I will be limited to my refresh rate as long as I have V-sync on. I have also been told that v-syinc is the way to go to insure best visual quality.

So I am tring to figure out if I should run at 1280x1024 with NO Antialiasing or Anisotropic filtering on, or 1024x768 with filtering on. But first I had to make sure I was getting the max refresh rate out of the monitor.

Any suggestions ? I don't want to shorten the life of my monitor :O)
