I have a Samsung Samsung NP740U3E-K01UB, that I'm looking into an eGPU solution for. I know what parts I need to order, but I'm torn and wondering how reduced gfx quality will be in this laptop.

It has an i5 3337u, and looking on intels website I found..
"PCI Express Revision 2.0
PCI Express Configurations ‡ 1x16, 2x8, 1x8 2x4"

from what I've read, pcie 2.0 would roughly cut the performance in half.
At what point would I run into diminishing returns for gpu quality?

The problem is the interface to the laptop. You don't appear to have any interface available except for the wireless adapter slot which is an x1 slot
You also have a uSB3 port that could be utilized but that has the same bandwidth as the x1 pcie lane.

I have not seen usb3 egpu solutions. Would you mind linking? I had originally planned to use that wireless card slot and run net through the rj45, but if I can use USB that would be infinitely more convenient.

To my original point - if you were in this situation, what would you grab? I was thinking maybe an r9 fury? Or would Nvidia be easier to set up? (I've heard some issues with running amd egpus)
