I just bought this for my upcoming home build. Then I found the reviews I had been looking for beforehand. Is this drive as bad as everyone says? What would be a similarly priced, more reliable alternative?
Besides being expensive for a DVD burner, it shouldn't be too bad. Opticals are so standardized and since they don't affect performance, you should just get the cheapest SATA model you can find.
Mine died after a year or so. Actually, the drive is recognized in Windows 7 and I can use eject to open the tray, but it stopped reading every type of disc.
I deleted the registry entries which didn't help, and the FixIt program doesnt work unless it can find a disc in a drive.
