Hi all,

I have a PC that is connected to a wireless network and wish to connect my Samsung Smart TV via a crossover cable but am having problems.

The PC is Windows 7, and my TV model is a UE40D5500.

After connecting the two together I thought I was in luck. It looks like the PC can see the TV; The TV is visible in the Network screen as both a "Media Device" and "Other Device". Through the TV, I can see also a Windows network.

When I try and access the Windows Network through the TV, I get the message "Failed to access the device. Please check the device and retry".

I then go and try to connect to the Wired Network through Network Settings. When I try to connect, I get the message:

"IP auto setup failed. Try the following to set up IP automatically, or set up the IP manually by selecting 'IP settings'.
- Ensure that the DHCP server is enabled on the router, and turn the router off and on again.
- Contact your ISP for more information."

DHCP is enabled through my router, so now I'm stuck!

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect my Smart TV this way, and if, please could you help? I must admit that Networking is not my strong point...

Thanks

So, you are connecting the TV via cable to your PC and the PC is connected to your router via WiFi? Is that right?
As you are not a network expert, i would recommend either to connect the TV via cable to the router or get a WiFi stick for the TV. Connecting the TV to the network through your PC requires activated internet sharing on windows and may create some routing trouble.

your computer does not pass on an IP to your TV from the router.

to get this to work with the crossover cable, you will have to assign an IP to the TV and ethernet card.

ie:
assign computer 192.168.5.1 and TV 192.168.5.2
no gateway and DNS server needed

or connect the TV to the router directly and it should get an IP and you should be able to connect to the TV via your wireless connection

Yes, that's correct. Running a cable from the router to the TV is a no go since my router is downstairs and the TV upstairs. I was trying to avoid buying a bespoke WiFi stick for the Samsung (since I've tried another), but might just have to settle for that. The other option is dragging my PC from my work monitors to my TV and
just playing media through a HDMI cable!

Thanks for your help. I'll have a fiddle about tomorrow and see what I can do, If I can get any further, I'll update.

Edit: I've just gone to Networks on my PC and looked at the properties for [TV]UE40D5500. It's giving me an IP address for the TV (169.254.113.57), does this help in any way?

I've just realised that I would have to have my PC on whilst I want to use Smart TV, so I may as well continue hooking my PC to the TV using a HDMI, or just accept that if I want to use Wi-fi that I'll have to get one of the Samsung dongles anyway!

Thanks for your input nonetheless, I should really use this as an opportunity to brush up on my very limited networking knowledge!

Just google a bit. You don't need the original wifi stick. I read some of the cheap ones work well.
