Question Samsung SSD 860 EVO not detected

Hi!

I've been reconnecting an older PC and having issues with the SSD (Samsung EVO 860 500gb).

Motherboard: ASUS Prime z370-A (BIOS Updated to 3004)
CPU: Intel i5-8600k
CPU cooler: Cooler Master (not sure)
Ram: 32gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3600Mhz
SSD/HDD: Samsung EVO 860 (and 16gb Optane Memory)
GPU: GTX 1080
PSU: Thermaltake 750w (approx. 5 years old)
Chassis:
OS: None at the moment - trying to reinstall Win 10
Monitor: Using a Samsung QLED TV for the moment

The interesting thing is when I change CSM to Legacy, I do see the drive in the boot sequence, but it is not showing in the SATA drives. I can also manage to see the drive if I try to create a RAID (not that I'm trying to create one).

This drive was last formatted when I moved the OS to a newer M.2 drive, which is not on this MOBO anymore.

Note that I have/had 16gb Optane Memory "attached" to that SSD.

I don't have an OS on that system anymore. Tried re-installing Windows 10 with a USB and the drive is not available for installation. The Optane 16gb stick is available as an installation drive though -- and after installing Windows on it, I can also confirm that the SSD does not show in Disk Management in Windows).

Tried different SATA port/power cables (which also worked with an older HDD), but it's impossible to have the SSD show up in SATA drives (both under AHCI and IRST). The only way to show it in the boot sequence is by setting SATA to IRST - it disappears when it's set to AHCI.

Hoping someone has a solution! most posts I'm seeing is where the drive shows up in SATA but not in the boot sequence... not the opposite.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

You might want to pass on the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model.

If you haven't you might want to try and swap over SATA data cables as well. Does the SATA based 2.5" SSD show up and operate as it should on a donor system? Which SATA data ports are you populating on the motherboard?

Thank you - edited my original post to fill most of it.

I tried different SATA cables (SATA1 and SATA2) and tried different cables to the PSU as well.
Both the cables worked with an HDD (that I have now removed). When either cable (data/power) is missing, the SSD is not showing in the boot sequence -- but it is showing when both cables are connected, which leads me to think the cables are working. But I never get it to show in the SATA list, or in the PCH Configuration in Advanced Settings.

SATA ports 1,2,3,4 are plugged in on the motherboard, but only 3 is used (Blu-Ray drive) and 1 or 2 on the SSD (not sure which one is currently connected, but I tried both).

Ports 5 and 6 are not connected on the MOBO, nor the PSU.
