Samsung to replace SM951 with PM953 ssd.

The Flash Memory Summit is taking place right now. New ssd models are usually announced during the conference. Samsung is no exception. The company announced three new models. Two of the models are business enterprise drives. A third model, the PM953, is an enterprise model that is also suitable for consumers, especially enthusiasts. What surprised me is that Samsung announced the PM953 M.2 NVMe ssd is a replacement for the SM951. Although the release is imminent, consumers are still waiting for the SM951 NVMe version.

It also appears the PM953 will be another OEM model which means no full factory warranty.

17 August - Update

Previous reports that Samsung will replace the SM951 with the PM953 ssd are incorrect. The PM953 will remain an enterprise class OEM ssd.

Custom PC Review just published the following update:

" We originally posted above that the Samsung PM953 would likely be the successor to the Samsung SM951, but we were recently notified that that information is incorrect. The Samsung PM953 is designed to be for datacenter/enterprise applications while the SM951 will be for client applications."

"That being said, we’ve heard rumors of an upcoming Samsung 3D V-NAND based PCIe client SSD that should be announced fairly soon. Samsung will be holding their annual Global SSD Summit at the end of next month, so with any luck we’ll get more information during the event. Be sure to check back for more!"

If the information is correct about the only thing consumers "might" have to look forward to this year is the release of a retail version of the Samsung SM951 NVMe ssd.

Do you think there is much chance they will release a 1TB SM951?

Samsung has the technology and manufacturing capability to produce a consumer 1TB M.2 ssd. Samsung usually keeps quiet about new products so I don't have any additional information.

In the meantime, Toshiba, which owns OCZ, recently announced their brand new OCZ RevoDrive 400 M.2 3.0 x 4 ssd. The ssd will be available in a 1TB capacity. The 400 will come with a Toshiba controller and Toshiba flash memory.
