My extrenal ssd (SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD ) should get around 500MB read / write to my understanding, I’m getting closer to 40, I ran CrystalDiskMark on it with the results below. I tried usb c - usb c, in my usb-c thunderbolt (not applicable here) port, for the below results. I then tried usb-c (the device port) to another USB 3 port on a different port and got very similar results. It's formatted as it arrived exFat and I have never formatted it. I am using 80% of the drive, perhaps that is the issue (unfortunately I did not test it on arrival). I do access / write files from both windows and linux dual boot (though mostly windows). I'm on a Lenovo Y740 laptop.

Any general troubleshooting steps?
Can I determine that the drive itself is the bottleneck not a setting / software / port issue?
Can I rule out bad cables as I tried a seperate usb-c => usb-c and usb-c => usb 3.0 with identical results?

Appreciate any suggestions.
