Hello,
I have an 8GB sandisk usb memory stick that is giving a consistent "i/o error". What is the reason and can it be rectified?

I/O errors typically mean the drive in question is faulty. This is not rectifiable so you need to throw it away & buy a new pen drive. Pen drives are very unpredictable as regards their reliability or lifespan, consequently they are suitable only for short term storage (eg transferring files from one PC to another).

Never use one to hold backups of important files.
