There's not a huge difference between the 290 and 290x; the difference is price percentage wise is about the same as the difference in their performance, so you will get what you pay for either way. If you don't mind spending the extra $30, I'd recommend the 290x. You would get slightly better long term life out of the 290x and it will let you run games at higher detail levels without having to overclock the cards.
