AMD all the way! And don't get a 560ti until the refresh hits...you'll be getting a MUCH BETTER card at the same if not lower price of the current 560ti's.
 
The factory OC'd 560 Ti (same price as reference card) is my choice, main reason being it's extreme overclock ability. With a reference speed of 820 MHz, factory OC'd versions are readily available, most at 900 and few at 950. Equipped with over sized coolers, it's rather easy to push these things up well over 1000MHz. Competing cards from AMD compete well "outta the box" but look at the factory OC'd versions and you will find the OC 's are marginal and the cost is high. Then again, the same is true of the 570 and 580. When paired in SLI, the advantage increases.....twin 900 Mhz 560's score 862 fps in SLI for about $450 beating the $500 580 by 40%. The twin 560's also top not only the factory OC'd 6950's (759 fps) but also the 6970's (825 fps). All scores from Guru3D website @ 1920 x 1200

Check benchmarks and commentary on the game(s) you intend to play. Overall, it looks like the GTX560Ti is stronger, but there are a lot of specific exceptions, and there could be driver issues (which are NOT unique to AMD!)
I have an Asus GTX560Ti DirectCU, that is not getting hot, but I see anomalies from time to time that have me less than confident in the underlying design of the card. I've used multiple driver versions, and all show this issue. I don't think the card is outright defective as the occasional artifacting and texture issues are not consistent (as they were with the first instance of the card I received and DID RMA) and not related to heat. I am thinking to try to send it to Asus for credit on a different GPU, likely AMD.
 


It's hilarious that every seems to think a 560ti is better than a 6950, you're clearly misguided fanboys. Granted Toms has had the 6950 as the best value card for it's bracket since release. Yes folks, over the 560ti.

that has a solid 10 benchmarks. At what point is the 560ti better? that's such a joke it's not even meant to compete with the 6950?The 560ti is a great mid range card. The 6950 is a great low- highend card.

6950 hands down. and lol to everyone who says otherwise.

This is a good thread to bring out the fanboys. Me being one of them, I would prefer to own a GTX 560 Ti over an HD 6950 simply because it's an nVIDIA card. As some have said before, it's really up to you. Both cards are great and you will not be disappointed in either.
 
Overclocked 560Ti eats it alive and is comparable to GTX 570 benchies.

so you're suggesting he buys the 560ti and overclock to stress it and increase power consumption so that he can still have a slightly subpar card?

Yes the card is faster at stock but once overclocked the Ti is comparable.
Most people do not leave their cards stock....

Sure a 560ti will use up a lot more power over clocked than a stock 6950 (in the end the 560ti is more expensive in that regards) will likely die sooner due to be overclocked and is still at best, on par with the 6950.

I'm still failing to see any pros.

At the end of the day, the cards are even enough. Both play the same games at similar rates. You won't find a game unplayable on one card that will be able to play on the other.
 
Phys-x, lesser driver issues, /refresh of 448 core 560Ti should kill the 6950....

Lesser driver issues? The cards go blow for blow typically on driver failures. Which are typically nil unless you approach the SLI/Crossfire Configs. However if there was a driver "Winner" then yes it would be nvidia. If there was also a power hungry(load-watts...) over priced award, it's also Nvidia.

As for the rest of what you said, you have no evidence of such?
 
Right now, I'm more concerned about nVidia's drivers than AMD's for single cards, but that could change. This thread IS bringing out the fanboys. Each card has its merits, and regardless of which one wins "most" of the benchmarks, check which one wins for the specific game(s) you [want to] play. For example, even a GTX460 beats the HD6950 in Civilization V, but I doubt the most crazed fanboy would claim it's the better card overall. Consider PhysX; I like it in Sacred 2, but would give it up in a heartbeat if stability were an issue.
And, fwiw, If I had to bet, I'd say MOST people do not overclock their GPUs, especially for other than testing.
