If you got a SSD just to improve latency (which most of us do), and is a cheaper SSD (Under 300$), there is no real benefit from going from SATA 2 to SATA3.
But if you put a lot of money in a really good SSD with outstanding Read/Write performance, there will be observable performance increase by getting SATA3.
At last, don't buy a cheap SATA 3 controller, since cheap ones don't really boost performance and can even worsen it. Buy at least a good $60+ controller. Make sure it is PCI-E, not PCI.
Hello,
Currently have sata 2 mb. want to add sata 3 ssd. would it be beneficial to get sata 3 controller as well?
It probably wouldn't be worth it.
You would need a PCIe x4 or x8 controller card to get maximum advertised speeds from a SATA 3 SSD.
Of course you would also need an available x4 or x8 slot on your motherboard to connect the card to.
You would have to spend a minimum of $250. For that kind of money it's probably best to save for a motherboard & cpu upgrade.
You can still get a SATA 3 SSD and it will be compatible with your current motherboard.
