Hi guys,

I have a hard drive from my previous computer I would like to temporarily install into my new system. Problem is, the motherboard (Asus Z270-AR) has 6 x SATA III (6.0) connections, and the hard drive is an old WD Caviar Green (model no. WD20EARS-00MVWB0). I think but am not 100% certain it will be SATA I connection. I've read that SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II, but what about SATA I?

So, is there anyway I can connect this and it will work?
Reason I would like to do this is simply for quick file transfer between my old and new hard drive.

I've tried searching for the answer, but all questions i've seen answered were for the same problem backwards, where the HDD was the SATA III version and the mobo SATA II etc.

Hi and thanks for answering.
Actually, I thought the same, but when I plugged it in I can't find it in windows (10, 64-bit, home) explorer.
I should explain I've just built a new system, and put in a m.2 card which I have now installed new windows on.

There is also a SATA SSD connected from my old computer I intend to keep using (for games etc).
There is a new WD Red HDD installed that will be there for file storage.

Ah damn, good point!
I'm looking thru the manual, and it doesn't show which one is SATA 0. There are, according to the manual;
SATA6G_1 SATA6G_2
SATA6G_3 SATA6G_4
SATA6G_5 SATA6G_6

Until I can open it up (tomorrow) I'm not sure which connections are connected to what drives due to the case design.
But would SATA 0 equate to _1 or _2? I think, I had the WD Green on _2 before...

Ok, I couldn't help myself.
Plugged it back in. Making sure it wasn't in SATA 1 or 2
It shows up, but in file explorer the drive is just called NTFS (D) and there is no capacity bar showing underneath, just repeating NTFS again.

I'm using Win 10 /64bit - but I was using that before as well (on the old computer), although that was the Win 7 upgrade, this now is a fresh copy.
The hard drive was working fine up until now, I would be very surprised if its a hardware failure...

If I look in device manager, it is listed there and says the device is working properly.

When I look in disk management, both the Red and Green drives are listed there.
The Red Drive (F) has a blue bar on top and says Healthy (Primary Partition) 1862gb
The Green Drive (D) has a blue bar on top and says Healthy (Active, Primary Partition) 1863gb

If I try to open it anywhere, it says 'd: is not accessible, access is denied'
