Sata III Port Multiplier

I am looking for something to use with a Star Tech SBAY5 BK external hard drive enclosure.
Also, I find a conflict of information concerning the SBAY5 BK enclosure.
1. The spec sheet indicates that this unit supports sata III transfer rates.
2. However, the manual for this unit indicates that only up to sata II transfer rates.
I thought that I had already posted this question but could not find it on the site.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, that is what I am looking at. I will contact StarTech to find out which is correct. I did forget about another question, which is this:

I have looked and looked for a expansion PCIe card, port multiplier, that is Sata III capable and have had very little success. I was hoping that you might be able to point me in the right direction for that.

And, I regret not giving you enough information at the onset. My desktop is a HP Pavilion Media Center m8167c. I have been told that my motherboard probably will not support PM. I will copy system configuration below:

There is no such SATAIII port multiplier, all the PM board from SiI and Marvell will work with SATA I, II, III HDD

But it wont operates as SATAIII spec, only SATA II


As for SATA III (6Gb/s) PCI e supports Port Multiplier (windows OS only) you can get eS3-PCIe21

The StarTech SBAY5BK SAS/SATA Mobile Rack mentioned is neither a SAS expander or SATA port multiplier based rack... it is simply a mobile rack with 5 individually separate data cable connectors.

Thank you for writing back. I think that my MB only supports PCIe 1, not 2. I did get an I-star, 5 bay, trayless, enclosure, sata 1, 2, and 3 with PM. So the controller with PM support is what is holding me up, along with current price of HDs still so high. Sometimes the spechs do not tell you if it is PCIe 1 or 2. I believe the controller you suggested, above, is PCIe 2.

If indeed I-star states support SATA 3, they are lying... there is NO PM support SATA 3, it will make SATA3 work as SATA2 (compatible mode).

To use this PM configure (see all five drives). There are TWO options:

Indeed, I was under the impression that the 5 drive enclosure with built-in PM, supports sata I, II, and, III. I am at a loss to what I should say, here. Perhaps a little more clarification.

So, I understand that you are saying there is no PM support for Sata III. Does this mean that it has just not been developed yet? Or, is it that, there simply can not be PM support for Sata III?

Perhaps I misunderstood I-Star. At this juncture it is probably a moot point as I have had the unit for some time but did not put it in operation because of hard drive prices being so high. Prices are coming down on HDs so I may be able to put the HD enclosure into service soon.

The question that is at hand is this: Just which PCI-e expansion card with PM support, do I purchase? Am I correct in saying that PCI-e 2, cards can be backward compatible with my PCI-e 1 mother board?

Meantime, I will look at the links you provided.

There is no word from PM chip set manufactures, mainly: SiI, Marvell, JMicron...about PM SATAIII (6Gb/s).

Every exist PM will work with SATAII drives, because SATA III drive will run @ SATA II mode.

Depend on the mode the PM configure, it will have effect or not... Example:

JBOD - Just a bunch of drives.
It does not make ANY different, due to drives mechanical limitation, these drive ranging from 65~110MB, which is way below the SATAII bus can transfer.

software RAID - Would be a problem, because it's a slow solution to begin with.

Hardware RAID like SPM394, SPM393 then I would think SATAIII would help. Current speed is 250MB/s with SATAII, but with SATAIII it may jump to 350MB~ 425MB/s...

Again this is speculation only There is no SATAIII PM to test o confirm the result

You can get eSATA-PCIe21, eSATA_PCIe8 two and four ports

Yes the PCIe V2 works with PCIe V1, but it runs at slow speed
