sATA motherboard not running dual IDE

hi

i have asus p5-kpl SE motherboard ,

i have a sATA HD installed , now i tried to install a IDE HD and dvd drive

but the pc wont recognize either of them , but they work individually fine

i connected the hard disk and the dvd drive (both are IDE ) using the same IDE cable

so in short when both are connected none works and when one is connected it works fine

Check the jumpers on the IDE drives are set so that one is Master and one is Slave.

On the drive label or beside the connections, there should be a diagram showing the jumper positions. This is a block of usually 8 pins next to the IDE connector, that can have little bits of plastic+metal plugged over them to change how the drive acts.

On one drive, pick the diagram called Master, and put the jumpers into that position. On the other, use the diagram for Slave.
