Discussion SATA SSD vs M2 adapted

I want a 2nd SSD drive on SATA (cos I have only 1 m2 slot).
Is it better to buy a SATA SSD or a M2 SSD and use an adapter ? Considering performances, price, power. A M2 to 2.5" SATA is like 20$.
I know that the SSD will have a bottleneck, but it may still be convenient.

If the new drive will be a SATA drive, no reason to bother with M.2 at all. Just use a 2.5 inch traditional SSD.

M.2 SSD can be SATA M.2 SSD (Samsung 860 evo M.2, Crucial MX500 M.2) or it can be NVME M.2 SSD (Samsung 970 evo).

I think you're confusing things here.

Note - to a regular SATA port you can not connect NVME M.2 drive. There are no such adapters.
But you can connect SATA M.2 drive to regular SATA port.

M.2 SATA drives are getting harder to find for purchase. I wanted one for a Raspberry PI recently and the MX500 was only available in 2.5 inch form factor. Crucial's website does not eve list the M.2 form factor for the MX500 any more -- https://www.crucial.com/products/ssd/crucial-mx500-ssd

Well, mate, you have to tell us what is the system you are using now before we can give some decent suggestions.

Sata ssds are a bit expensive...

They are not.

Do not even consider QLC NVME drives. Those have terrible write endurance.
That's why they are so cheap.
