SATA SSD vs PCIe SSD

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying a SSD and I don't know if I should buy a SATA or PCIe SSD. The PCIe SSDs are quite expensive, but if I choose to buy a SATA SSD I'd have to upgrade to SATA 3 and buy a new mainboard and CPU. My mainboard supports SATA 2 and PCIe 2.0. PCIE 2.0 has throughput of 500 MB/s per lane, so I don't think it would be a big difference to PCIe 3.0.

SATA 3 (6Gb/s) SSDs are backwards compatible so it will work with your current motherboard.

Granted, you will only get SATA 2 speeds (151MB/s - 300MB/s), but if you are upgrading from a HDD, it will still be a big difference in performance.

Just buy the largest capacity SATA 3 SSD that you can afford and then start saving up for that motherboard/cpu upgrade.

OK, I'll do that. I researched a bit and I found out that my HDD has a transfer rate of approx. 125 MB/s, so 300 MB/s would be much faster 😉
