SATA to network interface

I'm currently backing up the home folder of my PC every week to an external HDD that I turn off when it's not being used. This way, any catastrophic event will not destroy my backups.

However, recently I bought a small webserver for my personal needs and I need to back up that server's files as well. I might use the same HDD for that, however, there's a small problem. I have no practical means of connecting the same HDD to that server. Switching the USB cable every time it needs to back up is not a practical solution.

The external HDD is simply a standard 3.5" HDD with a reusable PCB card that interfaces SATA to USB in a casing. This gives me the idea that it should be possible to interface SATA drives to the network directly. I could buy a NAS device, but that's just more money spent on something I don't really need. Although, if the only option is to buy a NAS device, I'll consider it anyway.

Is there a device for sale that I can use to interface SATA to the network?

Solution
No, that controller card (or any sort of controller built into a NAS) provides the I/O interface needed to translate either network data or USB data into the SATA connection.

There is no "adapter", the adapter is a proper NAS package.

That's what I thought. You must be thinking "what kind of ludicrous idea is this?" 😛

Not that ludicrous, it would be nice to have a little plug in adapter, and TBH it doesn't seem completely not feasible, drive enclosures are just a larger version of it. But whats good about the enclosure is it does protect the drive, and being they are mechanical they really aren't meant to be handled all the time. So its just safer this way.
