Hello All,
I bought a SATA to USB cable from DX.com SATA to USB cable
I use the usb 2.0 connected to a 5V 2A (10W) adaptor. The usb 3.0 is connected to the computer.

If i plug it in into a 2,5 inch HDD or a SSD it starts up and i can transfer files.
But if i plug it into a 3,5 inch HDD the HDD does nothing. And the drives are not dead.
What i do see is that when i connect the 3,5 inch HDD to the powersource it does pull power from the adaptor. Only it won't start.
I tried with different 3,5 inch HDD but both won't work.
1st: WD - 30EFRX
2nd: Samsung - HD10SJ

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Wing Chun warrior! :)

The SATA-to-USB cable alone cannot work with 3.5" drives because they need additional power supply in order to be able to get them recognized by the USB.
You'd need an additional AC adaptor to plug the drive directly to the power socket or you can use a docking station.

Let me know if you have more questions! Hope I was helpful! :)
