Hi,
I'm new here and I have a question. I need to hook up a 3.5 HDD. How do I test the polarity of a female barrel power jack on a SATA to USB adapter? I want to know if I can test without powering it on or if I stick it into the USB there is some way I can check.

Thanks.

Solution
It has a female barrel jack on the back that I thought could take 12 volts. The barrel jack goes at the back. So I can't do it this way? There's a demo in the link what I am trying to do. The dude takes a barrel jack and a usb, hooks them up and it's done. If I can't I'll order something else.

Why not simply order an enclosure for your drive that comes with the power you need?

$20 and done...

You can't plug a USB in backwards unless it has been damaged.
Not sure what you are trying to do.
Sata connectors, USB plugs, Molex power connectors etc........
All these are keyed to make sure I can not plug them in backwards!
I do not recommend making your own as the market has everything you think you might need.

So that's a no then? I know you answered me but I need another confirmation. I am using this also for a hdd in my ps2. I need to check and load my ordered hdd on my pc. So I need to know what to do. I do not speak chinese so I can't really speak to the seller. So any help would really benefit me right now.

Thanks.

Edit: I also want to connect this outside my pc not inside. I am fairly new with this whole process. I just need to know more about the barrel jack and how to test it's polarity and if it is possible to power the sata 3.5 drive with the 12 volts.
