Sbs server 2003 external powered backup drive hangs server when unplugged

Hello,
when I unplug my backup drive then plug in the new usb backup drive for backup rotation, it hangs the server. I have to restart the server to be able to complete backups and access the backup drive. Do you know why the powered usb seagate 1tb drive hangs the server when plugged in?
