HP Scanjet is connected via pci adeptec scsi and is recognized in that new
hardware wizard correctly identifies it and after it is installed, if I turn
it off, I can get a message that it is turned off or not connected.
However, whenever I try to run software, including the scanner check from
control panel I get a message that it is in use by another program.

The HP 5p is on the hardware list of scanners that are compatible with WinXP
and the Deskscan II software from the HP site is also supposed to work with
XP.

Any help appreciated,

Henry

My bet would be that Windows is using the scanner and when you try to
use HP's software, it won't let you because Windows' software is using
it. Check with HP's website to make sure there are no services you need
to disable or anything to make their software work properly.
Unfortunately, I have a MFP and don't have an HP scanner 🙁
