I have an older Nikon Coolscan IV ED slide scanner that I would like to use with Windows 10, but the scanner is not recognized by the computer. Although I have tried several solutions--reinstalling the driver, using Vuescan, etc.-- nothing works. It's as though the scanner weren't there. I imagine that the scanner uses USB 1,0, Would this make a difference?

usb is backwards compatible, so a usb 1 should work just fine on a usb 3 connector

the driver you mention, is for windows 7?

with what aplication is working th scaner, the windows scaner or the nikon tool?

do you have connected the charger for the scaner? does it power on the light on the scaner and the exploration lights inside it?

this model?

Thanks very much for your response. The scanner is indeed the one in the first link in your message. (The second link doesn't work). I don't know if the driver is for Windows 7. I've downloaded several from the internet, but none of them specifies the version of Windows. I do not have the original software.

I've tried both the Windows scanner and the Nikon program, Nikonscan, aas well as a few others, but they all say that they cannot find a scanner.

The scanner does not have a separate charger. The cable plugs right into the back. When I turn it on, the green llight appears and it makes a noise that indicates it is ready for a slide to be inserted.

I've tried two different USB cables and several different USB ports on the computer.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

You might not want to hear this but a LOT of manufacturers have dropped ALL support for older printers and/or scanners from recent windows versions.
Microsoft has pretty much put a band-aid fix on printer side but scanners? nope.

3rd parties have their own fixes too.. to a degree. Not tried it myself but... It is a possibility:

Edit: Reading comprehension fails me. You've tried vuescan already 🙁

How true! Nikon stopped supporting scanners a number of years ago. That's probably the main reason I have not found a fix yet. Yes, I tried Hamrick, whose Vuescan looked OK, but it couldn't find the scanner. If it could, my impression is that the program is reasonably OK.

It's a nice scanner and I'd hate to have to toss it. Oh, well, thanks for your suggestions.

the xp machine is simple to do, in fact, buy a second hand pc with xp on it and install the drivers you found or use the cd you have with the old drivers, i bet you can find a old xp machine at 50 or 100 dollars with quite decent specs and capable of work in small network, that way you capture the files on the pc nd then move them ot another machine to process them, would be a easy task, if you set the xp machine to run anydesk or teamviewer all the time, you can even leave it headless, no keyboard or mouse conected to the xp machine

I thought I'd have to build it, but I now see online that there are many used XP machines for $100 or less. Do you think a laptop would work? It would take up much less space than a desktop.
