So I've got 2 hard drives installed, one 500gb ssd (which has my OS, dev programs and games) and a 3tb HHD which I basically store old photos/completed art on. I've noticed the transfer between the 2 is taking an astronomical time, and sometimes when I've clicked the pc while it's trying the whole of windows or file explorer itself crashes. So I've started trouble shooting and have ran the disk check on them(Note my hhd isn't particularly full I don't think I've even used 500gb on it). The ssd was about 10 mins, the hhd has been going for 7 hours (it's said 8 mins left and stayed at the same spot for about 5 hours). I know it could take several hours or even days but I'm wondering at what point do I give up (and accept that my drive is probably failing, so I can try saving files). I'm planning on leaving my pc on scanning overnight

Solution
is there a reason windows itself would crash cause of the HHD when my OS is on my SSD (my ssd is scanned and has no issues)?
Yes, that's possible.
The drive as 472 (hex 01D8) pending sectors. This means - at some point drive was not able to read those sectors.
Spare area has been all used up (relocated sector count is below threshold).
Those pending sectors can not be replaced anymore.

Windows encounters failed sector, tries to read it, fails, sector can not be replaced, file explorer crashes.
HDDScan and Victoria for Windows are two tools that will identify "slow" sectors, ie those that are bogged down with read retries.

You should check the SMART status with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo or either of the abovementioned tools. Look for reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors. If the drive is failing, you should back up ASAP.

Am I able to install and use those tools if its still scanning? I don't want to interrupt it and start again

It sounds like your drive is dying.
I think it is. I woke up and my scan says it failed to finish, it was still going from 5pm to 5am at least (i couldn't sleep and checked).
I used HHD Scan smart tool and it's got a red state for Reallocation Sector Count and yellow states for Reallocation Event Count and Current Pending Errors Count. I'll be honest I don't know what those mean but googled the first and it said my drives about the die

The drive has failed. Backup and replace.
Relocated sectors count is below threshold.
I thought that'd be the case (i'm not really surprised as when I went to check how long my warranty was I noticed a lot of newer reviews say this drive failed within a year, mine has been going since 2018 so I guess I got the better end of the deal). I have one question though (just out of curiosity), is there a reason windows itself would crash cause of the HHD when my OS is on my SSD (my ssd is scanned and has no issues)?

Thank you, I'm in the midst of backing up now to an external drive. If there's any issues copying certain files is there any chance of recovering them? There's only one file I was unable to open before I started trouble shooting but I didn't test others. I'll be honest I don't really get the internal hardware stuff a lot (I do software programming) so I don't know if those failed sectors are holding any files

Just FYI, your drive is a rebadged Hitachi model.
I'll be honest i don't know what that means for me(the only Hitachi product I really heard about was the wand so I've no idea the quality of their other products). I picked this one on the recommendation of my ex when I built my pc 3 years ago but I'm happy to go with another brand if you have recommendations? I've only ever looked into the firecuda as I wanted one to upgrade my ps4 storage before

HGST products seem to be the most reliable at the moment, if BackBlaze's stats are any guide.

Some WD models are actually HGST products, and a few HGST models are actually WD products. Seagate plays this silly game with some Samsung models.

It pays to be aware of the true origin of your drive if you are one of those people who has a brand preference. That's all I'm saying.
