Scanning uses up ink

Why is it that my HP 6500 all -in -one scanner uses up all my colour ink when I am not printing, clean head, restart program, change ink cartridges and it still uses colour ink w/o printing .

So every time, I scan a doc, it goes through a warm up or start up and waste ink on nothing.

That is what I thought when I read it myself. Printers are all so cheap, its the ink that costs. All in ones get you same way even if you don't print anything.
