I dont think there is any reason at all to buy a 6970 (that I know of) Just buy the 6950 reference card and flash it to 6970 specs.
Your WD caviar seems pointless, 10 bucks more you can get a Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
Everything else looks good in my opinion.
If there is anyway at all you can up the budget to add in a 120gb SSD I would do it. I can not say enough about the benefits of having a SSD now. Especially for 3D modelling

I think you jumped the gun on best answer. This ram will OC to the same speed as the ram you have but costs $40 less because of the combo. There are better cases for that price or lower, like a haf 922, storm scout, a couple lian lis, cm 960 II A, but if you like the looks then go ahead with that one. You don't need 1000w with 2x 6970s, 850w is fine, even 750w will do. This was used in the $2k SBM. Cheaper mobo but you can go with asrock if you want. This will unlock to a 6970 and is $100 less. Cheaper dvd/cd. 3D modeling is not affected by ssd and is a very little difference in rendering compared to cpu power. I've seen benchmarks with only a 2% difference on ssd vs hdd in 3ds max. What it will help with is loading times and animation playback in viewports. Video editing or compositing is where you see the biggest improvements with a ssd.

Sorry about the gun jump. It seemed as if no one else was going to reply. As for the list, your ideas seem of merit, though I do abhor gigabyte and thus won't purchase their merchandise, (Colleagues and I have had to replace too many young gigabyte parts for our liking.) I will certainly take the rest of the list into consideration.

On the hard drive. Do you own one or do you know if it will DOA? Response Bias aside it seemed slightly more error prone than WD/Seagate drives usually are.

I never comment on Cases unless it's something obvious like storage constraints, video card limitations etc. Personal preference is 90% of the choice.
Also, I dont link sales, daily deals or combos because they change daily. So unless he is ordering in the next 5 minutes, I wont quibble over 40 buck difference either way. Nothing you posted answers any of his questions. Recommending overclocking something to provide value vs an underclocked item isn't prudent. Or we would just tell people to buy liquid helium and AMD chips because it's cheaper. Why not recommend him buying a 6850 and OC the hell out of it too. Not to mention longevity of OC products is reduced. He does intend to OC but not to increase value but to increase performance. And 3 dollars saved from a good HP brand to a generic LITEON? not worth it in my opinion.
Oh and try loading a 2 terabyte video on a slow HD, editing it then saving it. you'll be wishing you had a SSD.
Creator, as far as the DOA question on Barracudas it's hit and miss the same as with any hardware. Maybe you could find a company that releases booking info on defective returns vs non.

I wasn't saying your reply was bad, I would suggest and did suggest the same things you mentioned. I did not mean to offend you. Deals do change in a blink of an eye but the 1000w psu is unnecarsary and I suggested the same exact ram that was just an underclocked version priced lower(so it was not a principle of value over performance.) There are multiple articles proving ram in most cases are the same but clocked differently. I'm not sure what questions he asked but: is it in working order? Yes, but it could be better. And I did agree with you; ssd is beneficial and did put it in the build but he still only said modeling and has not mentioned otherwise. Any other changes I might have done was because it was in my cart already.

Now to op, every company has it's faults, many people swear how good some company is but no one can have a perfect product line. I know who the good companies are and just pick whoever has the best deal, I won't suggest someone who's bad. In the end, it's opinion and you're the one buying. I have no problem if you change anything. Everything I say is just a suggestion, nothing more.
