Question scratched cpu looks in good shape

im not sure wheather this this is severe or not but this item on ebay lists as back cover damage but only shows scratches on this cpu? can it still work fine?
im going for a decent pc build.

Yeah, that much force says something pretty physical happened to it.

Either it was laying on top of something, and was then moved around, or someone took a screwdriver to it intentionally.

its listed as $36 it also has return shipping enabled, looks like the description doesnt mention anything about me not allowing to ask for returns

That makes sense, the CPUs became less square when they moved to hex and 8 cores. Even less worth it though.

I would rather pay the slight premium for a new i3-12100 or 13100 and then start keeping an eye out for a used i7 after a while.

When they describe a damaged CPU as "for parts", I wonder what parts you could salvage from this particular chip?

If it had old-style pins you could un-solder them and repair a chip with snapped off pins, but who needs a spare IHS, unless a liquid metal upgrade has corroded the original?

personally wouldnt touch it with a 20 foot pole the scratches are all over where the pins make contact not worth the risk

Not worth it even that cheap. Zooming in on my tablet, the worst looking contact looks like the pad might even be gone.

To on Craigslist and look at people's family computers they are trying to unload if you want a cheap CPU.
