Scratches on Monitor Screen - OK or QC Issue?

Hi guys,

I've been having problems while trying to get a Dell U2713HM, with all 3 having defects in the AG coating:

  • ■ Monitor 1: Long scratch near the top and bottom bezel, fine vertical scratch near left & right side bezel, "tick-shaped" scratch just off-centre.
    ■ Monitor 2: Several small scratches and "pitting".
    ■ Monitor 3: 2-3" high, 12" long fine L-shaped scratch about 1.5" from left bezel, running about 1" above the bottom bezel, across approximately half the width of the screen.
In all of the above cases, the marks were not easily visible in dull or indirect lighting (with either the screen on or off). However, in direct lighting/sunshine, they are easily visible with the screen off. In the case of the first one, with the screen powered on, this was visible as a "shiny streak" at the top-centre of this image (my current wallpaper).

So, is this normal, am I being unreasonable in expecting a completely unscratched panel, or has Dell had a bit of an issue on the QC for these panels?

Thanks! :)

P.S. I got a pristine Dell P2414H first time earlier in the year, but my previous Philips 200WP7ES took 3 goes before getting an unscratched one in 2007 ...

mate if they had the plastic on them and the scratches were under it then its a manufacture quality control issue. i would return them and exchange them for a different brand. why? because if they can be bothered to quality control the bits that are visible to the user just imaging what the insides are like.

I returned the first two to the retailer (they're within driving distance, and it was easier to simply point at the scratch to someone...). :) I have just unboxed the third...

Brand new, still with the "security tape" still across the box opening. 🙁 I was wondering if this was common/normal, but I guess you've answered that. :)

Just wondering if I should carry on (I've gone through the retailer's entire stock of them, so I'd be waiting a while whilst they get more in), if I should wait a while and try again (the ones I had were made in August [1] and July [2,3], so might be from different batches?), or see if I can get a refund and look at another model?

Thanks :)
