Hi sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum in advance! My screen keeps turning black randomly and Im not sure how long its gonna last until it does so again so ill keep it short.

As of two days ago my screen stopped turning on as normal. Now it keeps dimming gradually until it turns black(the monitor remains powered) Im able to get the screen back up if i turn it on/off upwards of 10-20 times. As i did now. In fact it usually stays on for 10-20mins after that, and then I have to do it again. Im wondering if this may be a problem with my video card? I would think it wouldnt be though since...if it was wouldnt the screen not turn on at all? Or maybe that would be the motherboard? I didnt build my computer myself so Ill probably need to look up a video to watch on the youtube app of an old console to see how to disassemble in case it is.

The CPU is: AMD Phenom ll x4 910

Monitor is: HP 2009m (DVI)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01694120

GPU is gtx 750

and mobo: ASUS m5a78l-m

Also strange but....my monitor has now been on for 2 hrs and no need to turn it off and on since then. Though this has happened before and when i turned the pc off it was back to not cooperating so I dont wanna risk shutting it off again lol I did get a popup named avguirna.exe when booting up pc and mentioned a skype phone api? I deleted skype for now just to be safe but for now im hoping its just a monitor problem and not something inside the pc.

Not sure if this affected it but ive kept my computer on sleep mode for months instead of shutting it off, and the dimming of the screen has been going on for months as well. Its just now that its gotten this bad though. Thanks Id appreciate any advice!

If your screen is the older CFL back-lit(50 watts sure sounds like it for a 20 inch screen) type you may have a back-light issue. CFL lights in monitors much like normal florescent bulbs only last so long.

How old is your monitor?

If you have a bright flash light, try to point it at the screen if it goes black. Can you see your image(it will be hard to see since the screen is made to be lit from the back).

i was hoping itd be the problem since if its a monitor thats a simple fix. mine is from 2009 though so that might be a cfl issue. i didnt use it from 2011-15 but that might not matter i guess. Im already looking at another monitor, this time LED backlit but just in case is there anything i can do to try to fix it and sell it off for cheap or just trash it?

Thanks for the flash light tip ill look for one and report back on that. Im wondering why sometimes if i turn the screen on and off 3-4 times it works for a good hour or so but other times I may power it on/off upwards of 60 times and the screen wont stay lit more than 3 secs? I had it off for a week and coming back to it now im averaging 4 resets for a couple hours lighting.

As long as its not an internal issue...thatd be a problem. But then the screen wouldnt power on at all instead of intermittently ya

you need to google the spare part number for the backlight to see if there still made or if there a led replacment. if it not the backlight blub it may be the power board for the backlight.

Much like normal florescent tube lights sometimes switching them off and on will get them to work again(sometimes for a long time even.). The bulbs or the power system for them can go. Sometimes you can replace the parts at a decent cost, but you could have just another part waiting to go.

Lucky for me my 2008 Samsung is still going strong(with LOTS of use.). I did have an older one that just went blank. I replaced a fuse and some failed caps, but something else must have already been damaged. That one never worked again.

Thanks for the explanation Nuke, it definitely was the backlight as I now have a fantastic matte(hated the glossy screen) 23 inch baby and she is very beautiful. Not only that but my 2009m was not even full HD(wtf!) i NOW HAVE TRUE HIGH DEF 1080P. finally feel welcome to the 21st century with this thing. Also,, seriously who would have thought 3" would make this much of a difference(ladies, DM me). As great as the feeling was when the monitor suddenly decided to function after failing for days, it wasn't a sustainable high, so this monitor crapping out now seems like a boon in hindsight. I guess ill have to junk the old HP screen, unless I can find someone to sell it to for cheap, and wants to tear it apart and fix it themselves or harvest for parts.

I actually liked the look of glossy screens :)

Glad you got a new screen setup and working. The LED back light in most of these screens will last for a very long time.

Still have a working SyncMaster 245t(impressive with the number of hours and CFL back light). I am sure it is going to fail(almost 9 years old) at an awful time, but as a secondary/video screen I will not be in the dark when it does fail.
