Screen flickers and crashes when I go above 30hz from 1080i to 1080p

Ok so here is the deal: when I load my pc, I immediately see screen flickering as if the vsync on a game was not turned on. It gets so bad that it starts to turn my display off. I just bought an AMD 7970 as I upgraded from an hd 6870. I uninstalled all of the amd catalyst software and did a fresh install with what the AMD auto detect tool told me to download - it says I'm up to date on my drivers. In an interesting turn of events, I have found out that when I move the HDMI cable around, the flickering will stop - but for only a while - and then it will come back. I have a hunch that it might be the generic HDMI cable that I bought from china off of ebay. However, I did not experience this with the 6870. Here are my specs:

PSU: 650 watts
MOBO: MSI A7MA-G55
CPU: A6-3650
GPU: HD 7970
RAM: 1333 DDR3 6GB
1 TB HARDRIVE
1 DVD DRIVE
6 FANS

I think my PSU can handle all of the load...

I am seriously at a loss of what could be causing this problem. Is it a bad GPU? a bad cable? Any help would be great. I just want to kill dinos in ARK in relative peace before a carno rips me in half. we can all dream...

Yeah, the stupid thing broke right as I changed the GPUs out. I bought a better quality HDMI cable off of Amazon and it works like a charm. Was an $8.00 / 7 Euro fix.

***Take this as a warning to not buy cheap inferior cables off of ebay at a discount. You lose not only picture quality but the stability of the connection as well.****

It is a 1080p 3DTV. 1080i was one of the compatibility setting modes. You're right though, 1080i was really weird looking with the PC. I had been using an HD 6870 for a long time with 1080p on it just fine. The HDMI cable was a generic brand off of Ebay for like 2.00. I have learned my lesson with those pieces of junk.

I think it might also be the port too. I was just using the new cable and for the most part it is fine but the video started to crash and make a loud whitenoise sound. The DVI to HDMI cable from the DVI port is working good though.
