screen flickers and goes black

I have a Sony SyncMaster 2232BW monitor about 3 years old and on first turning on the computer and sometimes when it is left the screen goes black. I can see a faint image and wiggle the mouse and even push the button on the monitor to go between analogue and digital and it will come back after a couple of mins flickering. I have updated the drivers and checked the connections are ok. The computer is working ok because I can access data on my network from my laptop so this leads me to believe the screen is the cause of the problem. Any ideas on what I should do next? Me again misread monitor as it is samsung not Sony. sorry about that Colbara
