Screen flickers, frame rate drops to single digits

So, playing games like H.A.W.X., NFS Undercover, and a few others whenever i try and put the AA above 2X the screen flickers and frame rates drop tremendously...
when i put the AA back on 2X things return normal. Before turning the AA up, i'll have frame rates in the 50s or 60s.
Any ideas? could it be the low amount of dedicated video memory?

My computer is:
AMD: Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2991 MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 v.2
RAM: 4GB Mushkin DDR2 PC2-6400
OS: Vista 64bit SP2
VC: EVGA 8800 GTS 320MB

Can you please give us the resolution which you play at?
If you play at 1680x1050, the FPS drop can be explained by the low amount of memory the GPU has. AA uses alot of memory and depending on the resolution you play at that can be a bottleneck.

That explains the FPS drop. AA puts a lot of strain on the GPU and needs a lot of information to be stored in the VRAM.

Some games have greater needs than others. Now days 512mb is the bare minimum and is why I keep my x1900xt in for every day use. I suggest a upgrade due to the lack of mem and those G80 gts cards have a bad reputation of going tits up.

I would pass for at least 6~8 months regarding the GT300 due to high cost and with the current economic situation they will be forced to lower prices to stay afloat and same for ATI. If you still want to stay with Nvidia get a cheap G92 or GT200 card till then.
