Screen recording (hardware vs. software)

I apologize in advance if this is not in the correct section, but I wasn't sure where to post.

If I am considering doing some screen-capture work, will a physical screen recorder (I've seen VGA cables going from the pc to the recorder, to the screen) use less system recourses then a software screen capture program?

If it's for a single system, it's better to use software.
