Screen shuts when alt tab into game and out

When for example I swap between desktop and a game (civilization 5) the screen shuts for <1s and goes into game with a windows pop up from screen saying HDMI. My screen is an LG led screen connected to my HD6950 gpu with HDMI. Screen works perfectly but that's kinda annoying. Maybe I need to change a setting or something?

Plus this is happening now, I just bought this new screen it's the 23EA63

Are you running Civilization at exactly the same resolution and refresh rate as your desktop? If you don't, then switching between the two causes a resolution switch and your display loses sync for a few seconds.

Even if you run both at the same resolution, it is also possible that the game resets the display when it gains or loses focus.

you were right, Civ 5 runs at 59hz no 60hz option in the settings while I had 60hz @ desktop. Setting desktop at 59 worked. Thank you. Does 59 have any difference from 60?
