Screen suddenly goes black

Without warning, my screen will suddenly go black. Nothing will bring it back on, it is not a screen-saver or sleep mode. I can hear things in the background and speak on skype and other VOIP programs, so I'm sure it's not a shut down of some kind. It seems to happen at random, but this used to happen whenever I plugged in or took out an HDMI plug to switch one of my monitors to another task. Now it's simply happening at random.

I have a AMD card, a Radeon RX 480, and I considered that this might be a seating issue, so I made sure it was firmly in its slot. However, I don't believe this will solve the issue, and I want to see what everyone else thinks. It's also possible it may be the monitor, and not the computer, but I'm not entirely sure. It doesn't happen when I switch the cables in my monitor, only on my computer.

Solution
Hello Mecha_Face

Can you please check and confirm if the graphics, HDMI controller, and motherboard chipset drivers are updated? Many times, the obsolete drivers cause problems, and sometimes the issues arise due to the latest ones.

That said, if the latest graphics driver is installed, rolling it back to its earlier version (or removing the latest version and installing the earlier one from the scratch) might do the trick.

Feel free to report back for any further assistance.

Cheers!! :)
