Screen tearing casused by monitor or GPU?

I have excessive screen tearing in Overwatch if I turn V-Sync off. If I turn vsync on I have input lag. I am wondering whether the monitor or GPU is causing the tearing?

I am asking because I plan on buying a second monitor and would consider buying a different one of the monitor is at fault for the tearing.

I have 60 hz asus 27inch monitor and gtx 750TI GPU.

GPU can't cause tears, it's the monitor. Probably you are running higher FPS than the refresh rate of your monitor. If you want to eliminate screen tearing, get a 144hz monitor.

Are you sure? I get screen tearing even below 60 hz and with the game overwatch I read that many gaming monitors (including 144hz) and high end GPUs have the same problem.

Also if it's a monitor problem then why does it get fixed with vsync?

I'm looking for more answers.

Because vsync limits your frames to your refresh rate. 60hz means your monitor can process 60 frames a second, and vsync synchronizes those. That's why tearing goes away. Tearing occurs during any difference between the refresh rate of the monitor and the frames per second that the GPU produces. The monitor refresh rate is a constant - 60, while the refresh rates are not a constant. It's the same when the frames are below the refresh rate of the monitor. With 144hz it's way better since the monitor can process a way more frames and the tearing is almost gone, but can still occur when there is a difference. That's why GSync and FreeSync exist - to remove screen tearing, but those cost additional money.

Its the monitor.

My Qnix never Tears as far as I can see, even if I set it to 60hz. But by LG monitor will tear without vsync.
