In the past week or so(might have happened sooner but I just noticed it then) I have been getting moderate to severe screen tearing and have no idea why. I have spent the last few days looking through the tonnes of posts and articles about it testing different fixes and none have worked so far. Here is a list of things I have tried for narrowing down results:

I have V-Sync set to Adaptive in Nvidia control panel(no idea if it is compatible with my monitor though).
I have tried limiting my framerate via Nvidia Inspector.
My monitor and Nvidia settings have been returned to default settings.
All Drivers/Windows are up to date/

Here are my current specs, but I have a new monitor arriving in a few weeks, and if it's a pc issue, I wanted to solve it before it arrives.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: PNY Optima 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GTX-1080 FTW
Case: NZXT Phantom 530 (Red) ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit)
Monitor: Asus VX248H 60Hz 24.0" Monitor

I have tried everything else I can think of, any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Edit 1: Thanks a lot for the information regarding overheating cards, I do in fact have one of them and would have never known. I have updated BIOS and have filled out the form for the thermal pad. (I still have tearing after the bios update and restart.)
I also had neglected to mention that I see tearing the most is while watching videos, both html5 and flash. I hardly ever see any problems with games, and I have only seen it when the videos are fullscreen.

Edit 2: A quick video of what my screen does when I run a tearing/stuttering test, if it helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8_SpYZUznk

FINAL EDIT: I noticed it was just happening in chrome after a few tests, and that lead me to find the solution to Disable Smooth Scrolling in chrome://flags/
It is totally fixed now, and special thanks to /u/ianmo111 on reddit for the solution.
Also a thanks for pointing out about the overheating issue, potentially saving me a little under a grand if my card would have burned out eventually.

Solution
Adaptive Vsync doesn't always work as well as Nvidia advertises. Basically, if there's any hint that the next few frames could possibly drop below 60fps, the driver will switch Vsync off to avoid a possible stutter, and you'll see tearing. You should be good to go with a GTX 1080 on a 60Hz 1080p screen, so go ahead and switch the Vsync setting to On in the games you're sure you'll always get 60fps or better.

Also, Vsync can't be enabled if you're playing in borderless-fullscreen mode or windowed mode. You'll need to go Fullscreen in your games.

Solution
I have had similar issues. I had the original EVGA 1080FTW and I experienced some tearing on some games, albeit it was extrememly rare, I still experienced it. I did contact EVGA RMA and had them send a new card with the new thermal pads and the bios update (which btw was an amazing experience, they sent the new card before I sent the old one back), but I still every now and then get some light tearing. It happened in Far Cry Primal a bit, and it happens for me in BF1. I have a g-sync monitor, and I always set v-sync off in games. But I still get some tearing. For reference, I have a 6700k, 16bg DDR4, Formula viii mobo, H115 cooler.
