So bummed right now. Just built a new pc, and tried booting. kept getting the red cpu led on boot. Looked it up online and people kept saying this particular mobo has this problem, alot are DOA. So last resort, I decided to take off the cooler to double check the cpu. Was unscrewing them evenly like everyone told me too, when towards the end, BANG! scared the crap out of me.

The cooler is the kind that has the springs around the screwed, pushing them up. The damn thing ended up pulling all the screw holes / thread holes off the mobo!! Now I can't even try screwing it back in!

What do I do!? Do I tell them the truth about what happened and try to return it!? Do I say it came like that!? Do I just subtly glue them back on!?! Can't believe all four just flew off with the cooler. Going to need pliers to grip them to unscrew them from the screws. I'm actually happy this didn't happen on it's own, dropping the cooler on my GTX 1080.

Anyway, I'll call them and check out my options. if I can return it, how do I RMA something? I'm unsure on the details.

So dejected... Was looking forward to tonight so much..

Solution
I don't think you can break anything that way. CPU backplate just fell off.
Unless your case has opening for easy access to the cpu backplate,
you'll have to remove the motherboard from case and put backplate back.
Then you can put the cooler back.
Mmm it's just four holes in the mobo around the cpu socket. Like, where you'd normally screw in the screws for the cpu. Instead of screw holes with threads, they're just holes. The screw hole thread thingies are currently stuck to the cooler. Can't get them off for the life of me, gonna need pliers.

Can you see it alright? I took a picture through the glass case that still has plastic on it. But you can easily see the four holes where screw threads should be.

Do you think it matters that I tried putting the cooler on twice, using the same thermal paste? It came with thermal paste already on it, and me being a noob, when i first put it on the cpu, i realized part of it would be in the way of the ram sockets, so i had to lift it up and flip it around. That left thermal paste on the cpu.

Could that be why I got the red CPU led?

CPU - Ryzen 5

Motherboard - Tomahawk arctic B350

Cooler - stock cooler that came with Ryzen 5, think it's called Wraith Spire Cooler

Looks a lot like this one..

Only difference is there's no LED around the rim. Just black. THOSE DAMN SPRINGY SCREWS!!

omfg i want to drag you to a sandy beach then throw you down and jump on top of you!! You're right!!! It did fall off!

But... damnit.. The only thermal paste I had was the thermal paste that came on the cpu. That stuff is absolutely necessary, correct? Also... it was stuck on before.... Now it's not.. How do I get it to stay there while attaching the cpu cooler? Glue it?

EDIT: I'm talking about the back plate, not the thermal paste 😛

Also... What should I do about the red CPU LED light?.. It turns on as soon as i boot the machine, then after a bit goes away.. then turns on again a little later. I also hear the CPU cooler fan slow down the second time it turns on. Sometimes both CPU LED lights turn on. There's one near the EZ diagnosis LED section, which is the one that normally turns on. But sometimes the one close to the CPU and cooler turns on too.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I screwed something up when building, as I'm an extreme amateur. I don't want to dismiss it as a DOA motherboard or CPU just yet. Any ideas? I tried putting a jumper cap on whatever those pins were to clear the BIOS or whatever like one person suggested in another thread someone else made already. No luck.

I was rethinking about possible damage ..
when cpu backplate fell off, it might have knocked off some motherboard element or broken some pathway.
I suggest you remove motherboard from the case and carefully examine back side of it.

EZ debug CPU light indicates there's some problem with cpu. Either not installed correctly or may be there are some bent cpu pins.

Well, the thing is the red CPU LED happened BEFORE the back plate fell off. I checked the pins and they seemed to be ok. I have a feeling I didn't install it correctly. Maybe something to do with that that skinny metal rod that clips down on it.

I guess I'll bring it to Best Buy tomorrow afternoon and have them look at it. Hopefully they can look at it then and there, instead of taking it from me for a few days, then charging me hundreds of dollars..

Anyway. Thank you SO much for telling me about the back plate. I thought I wrecked the motherboard. At least I know I didn't wreck it THIS way.
