SCSI RAID and IDE RAID together? Possible?

Hey guys,

I'm toying around with the idea of setting up two seperate RAIDs. I just purchased that ATTO ExpressPCI dual Channel RAID card (UL3D) and I'll most likely be putting Cheetah X15s on that one.

However, for my pure storage needs and the like I was thinking of buying two IBM Deskstar's and RAIDing those with say a Promise FastTrack card.

Anyone know how well that would work or if it would work? I've not heard of anyone with both SCSI RAID and IDE RAID in their system so I'm wondering if it's even possible.

This works..

(jesus Storm you gonna cook bacon with this machine or use it for computing?)

***Hey I run Intel... but let's get real***

Muhahaha. I'm going for the drool factor this time. This is the first PC I've built completely new in almost 10 years. Always I've upgraded each individual part bit by bit.

About the closest I've gotten to a complete new system is when I help someone out by building them a system using many of the parts in my system, give them a major discount and then adding some money and buying new parts. They're happy because I upgrade often so the parts are not old and they have me to support it for a while if anything goes wrong.

But this time I'm going all out. My current PC is not exactly a sphinster yet. Dual PIII 500s, 256 RAM, all Ultra SCSI system. But this new one is gonna blow it away big time.

Friend of mine already has Dual PIII 900s or something like that and he's running benchmarks and showing how his system will outperform mine (Which will be 1.1 or more Athlon). Course I remind him that it's only for applications written specifically for his dual processor system AND now many of those around and the ones that are I wouldn't be running and he can't afford. :)

>> SCSI RAID and IDE RAID together

I just read the title of the post and inwardly cringed... I'm sure it's POSSIBLE -- but in an infinite universe, anything is possible 😛

you wouldn't make me go there at a gunpoint, unless I really had unbelievable amounts of free time and patience...

SCSI is 'fun' to put together to begin with...
SCSI RAID is very, very much fun to put together *properly* and well optimized
IDE RAID is less fun to be put together with, but issues can occure here as well...

SCSI RAID + IDE RAID is a joyful fountain of fun if you're a masochist and into that kind of thing... brrr... I get shivers just thinking about it...

of course, once you put it together, you do have a claim to fame, but seriously, I don't think its worth it...

IDE RAID performs very very well for me with IBM Deskstars, if you wan't more performance get 4 IDE drives and do quadraple striping, you'll be flying:)

Thanks for your reply. What sort of issues have you heard of when trying to do both?

I don't have to have both at all. I will have a SCSI RAID setup to place my critical type stuff like my OS and Applications and things like that.

I'll also be purchasing a couple of IDE drives for pure storage. I had just thought it might be nice to RAID those as well. This would give me some cheap storage upon which to put video captures. If I don't raid them I'll have to invest money and purchase more SCSI drives which can get expensive for sure. 2 SCSI drives is plenty

There aren't many. I would say one is .. which bios of which controller will scan first.. determining which array gets drive letters first in Win9X. (I have no clue) The other is heat and drain on one p/s. There is no reason why this shouldn't work..

I'll be running Windows 2000. I don't think drive letters will be a major concern. At least I'm hoping it won't. As for heat I'll be using the Alaska Cool case. Comes with 11 fans. Yeah it'll probably sound like an airport or something in here but we'll see. I probably won't turn ALL of them on.

And about the CPU drain. The ATTO ExpressPCI controller is very good about that. I don't know about the Fast Track. But I'll be running over 1.1 ghz. I think that will be sufficient....I hope.

Hey, it should work fine, but where are all the drives going? I don't think the fact that they are raided will have any negative implications. BTW I have 2 SCSI cards in my system, a two chain and a three chain, oh the fun!

Suicide is painless...........

Well, Right now I have 5 hard drives. All SCSI and 2 of them are full height (One I have to leave outside the case). But with my new system even with the other stuff I'm getting I will have space for 4 drives easy. I plan to have 2 scsi and 2 IDE drives. Most likely the 75 gig IBM Deskstars. And that's all the drives I will buy for a LONG time. At least for that machine. I plan to change my drives in my current machine to. Get rid of my 3 4 gig drives and replace it with 1 IDE drive.
