If you download a copy of puppy linux and install it on a flash drive then you can install testdisk. It's very handy to have a copy around, I use it all the time to fix windows and drives.

With testdisk if the drive is only corrupt and not completely dead you'll be able see and copy everything that is savable. Free no less.

It is a microSD card. When plugged into laptop it is not detected by Windows - so it appears to be dead.

It very well may be dead but testdisk can detect things that windows does not. Try running testdisk before you declare it dead.
