Sd card does not work on my computer and not in my camera at all

Hi all i have a toshiba satelite L655D laptop, and for some reason i cant get the darn cd/dvd to work it doesn't recognize disks of any sort i have tried them all. I nbought when i was in Iraq so i can speak to my family. It started fine, then I wasn't able to read disk and then eventually it stopped working all together I thought i just needed a driver that wasn't available down range. But since i've been home i have downloaded drivers and cleaning kits, contacted toshiba all with no luck anybody have any suggestions?

does the bios detect the drive? can you boot off of a windows installation media or an ubuntu or fedora liveCD? we're trying to determine if the drive itself is defective or just a problem with windows.

i was able to get it to recognize a memorex CD-r and to burn songs to it but no other cd's or dvd's will work.
