hi, I am a photographer (Nikon D800) wanting to establish a long distance (200 metres +) remote ability to review images as I take them using a radio controlled shutter release. In a remote location, away from an Internet connection, I want to set my camera on a tripod and, after remotely actuating the shutter with the remote control 200+ metres away, I want to be able to review the resulting image on my iPad without returning to the camera. I can use an eye-fi card to do this from about 30 metres away but is there any setup that will allow me to review images up to and beyond 200 metres away? I always have a generator with me so I can provide AC power to necessary equipment.

Thanks for your helped,

Thanks Kanewolf,

Thanks so much for your help. The issue I am concerned about here is that the eye-FI branded SD card that is generating the wifi network casting from the camera needs to be able to shake hands with this device and the device needs to be able to amplifi its signal and re-cast it to an iPad app made by the eye-fi SD card manufacturer in such a way that it is transparent. I am no techie but as far as I understand it the SD wifi card transmits its images but does not receive anything back from the iPad so your suggested piece of equipment only works one way. I first thought a powerful router would do the trick but found it could not be set up to shake hands with the eye-fi SD card and therefore the signal it sent could not be properly "read" by the eye-FI Ipad app. Do you think your solution overcomes this problem? If it does Im excited!

That device works like a WIFI access point (or router) It would receive the signal from the card and allow the iPad to connect to receive them. It has a high gain antenna to receive the weak signal from the card. Transmitting still requires handshake from the base station (AP). I have never tried one of these in this specific application. For under $100 it might be worth trying and if it fails you can always sell the unit for a partial recoup of costs.

Thanks, though I have been told that routers won't work I will probably try something like this if no one else has a definitive take on whether it will work or not. The thing I was told is that a router would need specific software designed to handshake with the Wifi card for this to work. I don't know if this is true or not. Does anyone have a firm grip on an issue like this? I sure would love to be able to wirelessly receive images from my camera when I am a couple of hundred metres away.

This is what eyeful customer support told me:

The issue with extenders is, the card remembers the mac address of the access point it is setup on. So when it reaches out to the network it will be trying to reach that specific AP and not the extender.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and help. As I said I am not a techie and don't really understand the difference between an extender, access point and router.i But I am very curious if there anything in their statement that dissuades you that your suggested device would work? Please bear in mind that we are not operating inside an existing wifi network. The only network operating here is that which is established by the SD card and picked up by the eyeful app on the iPad.

I didn't read anything that would keep me from trying it. If you have an unused router you can simulate something like this is the comfort of your office. Verify that you can successfully access the card on your iPad via a WIFI access point.
