I have a 32gb SD card with about 20gb of photos and videos. Today it decided it did not want to be recognized. I plug it into the card reader on my desktop and nothing happens. Same if using an external card reader and when I try with my laptop. When I put the SD card into my Sony DSC-HX9V camera it instantly says "cannot recognize this memory card. Format and use again." There is no physical damage to the card. At this point is there anything I can do besides send it to one of those companies that wants $1000 to recover the data?

Hi,

If the DSC is suggesting to format your card then it is possible that it detects the card but unable to recognize the file system structure of the SD card. If your camera has a USB interface where you could attach it to your PC or to your laptop as a mass storage then you try to get and image of your card from there. You can use DM Disk Editor to make an exact image of your card and recover your files from the image that you get. Good Luck

Hello, the more possibility is that your card broken that causes the data disappear.
However, have you ever heard about recovery tool? Such as 4Card Recovery, icare and so on.
Why not have a try.
At least there is chance to get your files back. You know, you can download 4Card Recovery for free.
Have a try.
The detailed steps are here.
Step one. Download 4Crad Recovery on your computer.
Step two. Start it and select the files that you wan to recover, you can choose to restore all as well.
Step three. Choose the ‘next’ button to scan it and here you just need to wait for several minutes.
Step four. Keep your recovered data on the other part.
Remember to back up my friend.

The camera does have a USB interface and when I insert the card to the camera and plug the camera into the computer the camera says

"USB Mode - Mass Storage - Reinsert the memory card. - Plays by pressing the "Playback" button."
and the screen is also flashing a error type code that says C:13:01
If I press the "Playback" button it says "Power feed with the USB disconnected."

I installed DMDE and it recognizes 3 additional "physical drives" when the camera is plugged into the computer.
the first is Sony DSC-HX9V : 1.0 : D89BE007F8CF
next is 20.1 MB Sony DSC-HX9V : 1.0 : D89BE007F8CF
last is 19.9 MB Sony DSC-HX9V : 1.0 : D89BE007F8CF

These appear to be the device itself and its on board storage. Which holds a few pics in case there is no memory card. Should I be seeing a 32gb~ sized drive on this program? I don't know how to make an exact image of the card nor if I can even locate the card.

I have heard of these kind of programs but nothing I have will read the card. If I could figure out how to make the card appear this is my first idea of how to get my pictures back.

It seems that it's the built-in internal memory of your camera and not the SD card itself. I think the only chance to get your pics from that flash memory is to send it to the pros then, if those photos are that worth enough for the cost.
