SD card shows as full but it is not

SD card used on a Sony camera - says it is full when in camera, but there is only a 3 minute video on it. The card is 8 GB. How to fix this problem?

Complete format it by plugging into a card reader > My Computer > right click on the SD card > format > uncheck quick format

I disagree.
You should always have the camera format the card.

So:
a) Copy off the video if you wish to keep it, then
b) FORMAT the card by the camera (if not done already)

Also, some cameras can't make use of more than 2GB so you'd need to check your camera manual to see if you can fully use the card.

Hi to both of you that answered me - thank you. As I am asking this for a friend, I will get them to format the card on their camera and let you know the result. They may not have formatted the card when they first used it.
