[SOLVED] SDRAM vs. DRAM?

I'll start by saying I'm new to the tech field. I was recently diagnosed with a disease and with treatment, I've finally seen some brain fog relief among other things. Now, after losing about 10 years of my life, I'm 23 and trying to catch up with the world so bear with me! Not trying to flex, just justifying my question if it seems elementary.

I just purchased a laptop that I'd like to learn video editing with and develop a youtube channel. I was going to replace the 8GB RAM DDR4 2666 it came with for this https://www.newegg.com/crucial-32gb-260-pin-ddr4-so-dimm/p/N82E16820156182?Item=9SIAHZU8UG2887

It would probably be more logical for me to buy the 16GB and buy another later if I ever do happen to need it. Buttt, the description lists this one as SDRAM. Google says that means "Synchronous RAM", so it's going to save everything through restarts? And if so, shouldn't that be more expensive?

Lastly, I was doing some forum surfing regarding used RAM and how buying new makes no difference. Am I making a rookie mistake buying new RAM? Thanks guys

DRAM, SDRAM, same difference.

What matters are DIMMS vs SODIMMs, with SODIMMs being for laptops and some mobile devices, vs regular DIMMs being for desktop and some all in one systems.

Also, what REALLY matters, is whether or not your device can even support the capacity or speed of any of those modules. Usually there is not a lot of leeway when it comes to memory selection for laptops and mobile devices, if any at all in some cases.

What is the EXACT model, including any sub model if applicable, of the laptop?

Thank you for the feed back! I did know about the DIMM vs SODIMM surprisingly. I've stayed keen on typing in "SODIMM DDR4 2666".
As for speed, I was just copying the 2666MHz from the 8GB stick that came with it so you raise some valid concern.

So, based on the user manual found here:

That unit can use memory modules which are SODIMMs from 2400-2666mhz. Little information is available, but from what I can see that unit supports a maximum of two 8GB SODIMMs for a total maximum capacity of 16GB of memory. I do not believe that it will work with 16GB memory modules. I could be wrong, but the maximum I can find, and what little information I can dig up on that primarily Walmart sold product indicates that it supports 16GB max and has two DIMM slots. You will want to open it up and verify. If there are two DIMM slots, then it only likely supports 8GB DIMMs per slot. If there is only one DIMM slot, then it must support a 16GB DIMM because I see options for the MECS-15 G2 with 16GB, but I don't see any options for it with more than that. You could also contact Eluktronics directly and verify with them, and that would probably not be the worst idea ever.

Damn, that's good to know. I probably won't need more than 16 anyways tbh. It does indeed have 2 DIMM slots but I'm unsure on the 16 vs 32 max. I'm glad you brought that to my attention as I was definitely going to buy a 16x1 or x2 tonight. I'll call Monday and see what they have to say. That's probably the best idea ever lol.
